The idea of \u200b\u200bcolonizing the south of Chile with families German origin, or with families of other European countries, is very old and dates back to 1526, being unsuccessful efforts to realize this task. In 1842, Bernardo Philippi Eunom takes up the theme and raises again the Chilean authorities to settle the Llanquihue area with immigrant Germans, after having explored the region extensively. After several attempts, the project is finally accepted and promoted colonization agent Vicente Perez Rosales, who put into practice this important mission by following the instructions of the State Minister Antonio Varas. Like many cities in our region, Puerto Montt was founded during this process. Between 1846 and 1880, slightly more than 5,000 Germans came to this area. People of different age, origin, social status, education and interests, from newborns to seniors, they ventured on a journey across the Atlantic. In most cases the reasons for leaving their homeland were political, economic and social organization. The desire for independence and hope for a better quality of life, and in some cases, complying with an adventurous spirit, were the main causes that led to the emigration. On November 28, 1852, landed in the yard Melipulli the first group of settlers brought from Germany. Shortly after the February 12, 1853, founding the city of Puerto Montt. In the picture, a group of German settlers arrived aboard a sailboat to our area, pose for a last picture before each family is allocated a farm near the Lake Llanquihue.

Puerto Montt in 1916

In its issue of May 6, 1916 puertomontino newspaper "El Correo del Sur", published a report written by journalist Argentina Ada M. Elflein that in those days ran our area. In part of his story to Puerto Montt described as follows: "We go to Puerto Montt on a Sunday. The audience overflowed Station, among which he emphasized the military element. The Mass was over and the families walked through the square to excellent sound of the regimental band. Great animation reigned in the long, narrow main street (Antonio Varas), which forms a bend (in Chillan street) and has uninterrupted row of business houses, sheds, warehouses and offices of companies and enterprises and commercial shipping. Facing the square, adorned with a bust of Manuel Rodriguez, advancing a long pier, a favorite promenade of Puerto Montt society. Behind him, on a high hill stands the Normal School building surrounded by gardens. The picture, a postcard lithograph of that year (photo by Enrique Mora) shows a view from the passenger and loading dock, where appreciate people dressed in the fashion of the time walking around this place.

the gramophone was the first system of recording and reproducing sound that used a flat disk, as opposed to that recorded on a phonograph cylinder. Patented in 1888 by Emile Berliner, was the most commonly used device for playing recorded sound from the 1890's. Our city, away at the time of the great centers of political, economic and cultural rights, received the arrival of these great inventions with the understandable delay its geographical location and technological development in the country. On 1 October 1898, arrived in this city, Don Jose Antonio Gonzalez, a native of Santiago, who as part of a series of exhibits by cities across the country, came with a phonograph of his property. The expectation in the community to hear this new sound was great advancement. Auditions are scheduled in various rooms at the Hotel Central, located at street corner Urmeneta O'Higgins. Each hearing of 2 hours allowed attendees to hear selected pieces from famous operas such as Il Trovatore and Carmen. The picture, a postcard lithograph by an unknown author shows the Puerto Montt, 1898.
