Para el terremoto del 22 de mayo 1960 que asoló la zona sur del país, la iglesia luterana sufrió severos daños estructurales además de caer su torre, por lo que tuvo que ser demolida más tarde. Según se cuenta, su campana sonaba estruendosamente con el movimiento sísmico.
